Full ScorecardFormer India skipper Mohammad Azaharuddin lauded MS Dhoni for guiding India to their first ever bilateral one day international series in Australia on Friday. India rode on MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadav half-centuries to win the series-deciding third and final ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and clinch the series 2-1.India had tweaked their batting line-up a bit and promoted an in-form Dhoni to bat at No.4 after Ambati Rayudu was replaced in the playing XI by Kedar Jadhav. Dhoni did not disappoint even batting at No.4.He hit an unbeaten 87 while Kedar Jadhav was 61 not out as India chased down 231 against Australia with four balls to spare. India were under a bit of pressure in the tricky chase when they lost Virat Kohli in the 30th over. But Dhoni built an unbroken 121-run stand with Kedar Jadhav to take India home.”I have always said our main batsmen should play in the first five. Dhoni played really well on Friday. After Kohli’s wicket, Dhoni kept his cool and took the game forward. Kedar Jadhav also batted well. As far as India’s batting order is concerned, I think Rishabh Pant will be slotted in at No.6 [for the World Cup]. The more India play with this batting order in the coming days the better. Dhoni, before coming to Australia, did not have that match practice and he will also get those chances in the future games,” Azhar told Sports Tak.advertisementFormer India captain Sunil Gavaskar too had praised Dhoni for his heroics in the series.”I am delighted with the way India have performed.. just becoming the second team to win a Test and ODI series in Australia. It’s never easy,” Gavaskar told India Today. “It is a fantastic achievement. Absolutely terrific to see Dhoni get the man-of-the-series award. Don’t forget he keeps wickets and to do that for 50 overs and come out and bat… Full credit to the man for his fitness and commitment to Indian cricket.”Gavaskar pointed out that it was important to not forget how craftily Dhoni ensured India not suffer any hiccups in their chase in Adelaide and Melbourne.”You need the partnerships and that’s what he got from Dinesh Karthik the other day and Kedar Jadhav in Melbourne but don’t take anything away from the way he made sure there was no collapse. Had Dhoni got out, India would have struggled,” Gavaskar said.MS Dhoni is known for his cricketing acumen – after the match, he conceded he was targeting certain bowlers towards the end. Dhoni even went up to the umpires to find out how many overs certain bowlers were left with.Gavaskar said that is the kind of intelligence that sets Dhoni sets apart.”You need that kind of experience and cricketing intelligence to take the team home. The Australian captain might have got it wrong with his bowling changes. MSD knew which bowler to target and he did that brilliantly,” he said. Also Read | Sakshi Dhoni’s message for Team India after historic series win: You fought like soldiersAlso Read | MS Dhoni is a superstar of the game, says Justin LangerAlso Read | Credit to MS Dhoni for his fitness and commitment to Indian cricket: Sunil GavaskarFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
